MCA Music recently launched the 30th Anniversary Edition of one of the most iconic albums of all time – U2’s The Joshua Tree. It was recently held at The 70’s Bistro in Anonas, Quezon City on August 3. Bistro regulars, U2 fanatics ,and rock scene enthusiasts converged to celebrate the music of one of the most legendary bands of all time.
The Joshua Tree 30th Anniversary Edition is a repackaged set that includes new and exclusive content, fitting for an album that Rolling Stone cited as “Their 1987 masterpiece… Thirty years ago, the wild success of The Joshua Tree transformed U2 into the biggest band on the planet.” The Los Angeles Times also once said that the album “confirms on record what this band has been slowly asserting for three years now on stage: U2 is what the Rolling Stones ceased being years ago—the greatest rock and roll band in the world“.
The event featured performances by bands that attempted to put their own spin to U2 hits and classics while retaining that distinct U2 flavor we all have come to love. Guitar rock band Gilt did their rendition of “In God’s Country” as well as an impromptu cover of “With or Without You”. The latter was also performed by electronic wunderkind Somedaydream. Zsaris also came up with the best cover of the night, an acoustic guitar and looped rendition of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” (from 1983’s War). Synth-pop band Paranoid City closed the night with their versions of “Vertigo” (from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb) and The Joshua Tree’s “I Will Follow”. Prizes such as free copies of U2 releases and ear phones were also given away to lucky viewers.
All in all, it was a fun event that highlighted U2’s greatness.
