In a recently recirculated interview from October 2016 with British GQ, Scottish record producer Calvin Harris explained why he “snapped” back in July 2016 after it was revealed that Swift secretly co-wrote Harris’ hit “This Is What You Came For” under a pseudonym. Once the news broke, Harris launched a string of (since-deleted) angry tweets, claiming that Swift was trying to “tear” him down.
“It was completely the wrong instinct,” Harris told the outlet, reflecting on the incident. “I was protecting what I see as my one talent in the world being belittled. It felt like things were piling on top of me and that was when I snapped.”
The 33-year-old — who released his fifth studio album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 today(June 30) — previously said in a separate British GQ interview from September 2016 that the media attention attached to his relationship with Swift was difficult for him to handle.
“It’s very difficult when something I consider so personal plays out very publicly. The aftermath of the relationship was way more heavily publicized than the relationship itself,” Harris explained. “When we were together, we were very careful for it not to be a media circus. She respected my feelings in that sense. I’m not good at being a celebrity. But when it ended, all hell broke loose. Now I see that Twitter thing as a result of me succumbing to pressure. It took me a minute to realize that none of that matters. I’m a positive guy.”
In relation to the artist’s self-proclaimed positivity, his Twitter rant at Swift last July seemed uncharacteristically sour. At the time, Harris and Swift had already ended their 15-month relationship, and Swift had begun dating actor Tom Hiddleston.
“Hurtful to me at this point that her and her team would go so far out of their way to try and make ME look bad at this stage,” Harris tweeted on July 13 in reference to Swift. “I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy [Perry] ETC but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it.”
Swift herself has been keeping relatively under-the-radar as of late, though she emerged back into the spotlight on Tuesday (June 27) to congratulate Russell Westbrook on his NBA Awards win.
