“Thank you for coming early,” greets Earl Generao, who opened the DOCDEFYVE night with his crooning vocals as Route 196 Katipunan slowly turned into a sea of eerily glowing white shirts.

Laser lights danced atop his and the other performers’ faces like energised candy sprinkles amidst the blanket of comfortable darkness only mostly illuminated by UV-A lamps. The blacklight party was an apt celebration on the 5th of January (and 5th day of the year) for the 5th anniversary of Docdef Productions. Other performers in the lineup were Autotelic, Rob & the Hitmen, UBE, Tom’s Story, TheSunManager, Dayaw, Mayonnaise, and Farewell Fair Weather.

Docdef Productions —whose name was derived from the finance term “document deficiency” which refers to accounts opened with incomplete and invalid documents— has been fulfilling its vision of finding and providing a home and platform for new artists for the last half decade, ultimately redefining a term with a negative connotation into something positive and promising.

The team behind Tagaytay Art Beat and In D’ Flow is set to bring more packed shows and keep on introducing new independent local artists to a wider audience this year.
