They say big things come in small packages; depending on who you ask, this usually is the case. And in Soul Supreme KZ Tandingan’s case, this certainly holds true, given how she sings with her raspy voice and how she dishes out a rap verses with her fast-talking mouth, all put together with her larger-than-life attitude whenever she goes onstage.

To prove the point, here are 5 videos that display Tandingan’s uncanny ability to sing like a songstress and skat-talk like a wordsmith:

  1. Over the Rainbow (Judy Garland, 1939’s The Wizard of Oz)

Before she became the Soul Supreme, Tandingan was an X-Factor Philippines auditionee. Considered an early favorite due to her jazzy take on the song as well as her display of rapping skills when asked to sing again, she would emerge as the winner of the first season of the singing competition.

2. Tadhana (Up Dharma Down)

Tandingan would mesmerize bystanders looking inside the Wish 107.5 bus as she dishes out a stripped-down rendition of the Up Dharma Down fan favorite, keeping it simple with an acoustic guitar player and a drummer serving as the rhythm section to her soulful pipes.

3. For Once in My Life (Stevie Wonder)

Channeling her inner-Lauryn Hill on this Stevie Wonder classic, Tandingan doesn’t try too hard to belt her way through the song, choosing instead to stick to her jazzy side and coast through the wave on this one. The result: safe from elimination.

4. Stay With Me (Music Museum concert)

KZ stays faithful to the spirit of the original arrangement as she covered the Sam Smith hit in her debut solo concert at the Music Museum.

5. Rolling in the Deep (Adele)

Bassist and Musical Director Karel Honasan did a good job making sure that Tandingan would go full-force on this number for her debut concert, putting together elements of funk, rock, and jazz, a mix that she would prove to be at ease with. And of course, in true entertainer fashion, she gives her band recognition, giving them time with the spotlight to display their chops.
