In a dressing room in ABS-CBN compound, Ogie Alcasid is seated comfortably and dressed casually with a jacket draped across his lap. He just finished rehearsing with the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra; together they will play live on It’s Showtime! in about a half hour and the studio has turned into a beehive of activity as airtime approaches.

While Alcasid went through the rehearsal with his usual funny asides in between reaching for the highest and lowest notes he can muster–with ease–the atmosphere is rife with logistics-related tension. Setting up and tearing down an orchestra’s requirements in literally a minute sends stagehands scurrying and the clock is ticking. Ogie is led to his dressing room away from the hive.

Thankfully, BillboardPH was granted a few minutes of interview time and promises Alcasid that it will be quick and painless.

“Noooo,” he responds. “Make it painful.” He laughs and proceeds with the interview. Alcasid seemed a touch weary from rehearsing the number twice but at one point says, “I talk a lot.”

Watch the BillboardPH interview below where Ogie talks extensively about his vocal range which has mostly remained unaffected by age (he turns 50 next month), working on NakakaLokal, and if he ever considered marrying his strengths as a comedian and ballad-composer in one tune:

The Showtime slot last Saturday officially launched Ogie’s new album NakakaLokal under Star Music, his first for the label. While he was never ever away from public consciousness–there’s nary a day during his nearly three decades-long career as a singer, composer, comedian, and product endorser where you don’t feel/hear/see his presence– the ten-track NakakaLokal features six new compositions. Produced by Jonathan Manalo, Alcasid recorded the album with the ABS-CBN Philharmonic under the baton of Gerard Salonga with guest arrangers including Ryan Cayabyab and Ria Villena -Osorio (the latter conducted the orchestra during the Showtime guesting).

If you’re curious about Alcasid’s sound with the ABS-CBN Philharmonic live, the NakakaLokal Grand Album Launch will be held tomorrow, July 22, 5pm at the Robinsons Magnolia Atrium.

Next month, Alcasid will hit gold–age-wise– and will celebrate with a concert at the KIA Theatre with special guests that include Davey Langit, Basti Artadi, Lara Maigue, Sam Concepcion, Yeng Constantino, and his daughter Leila.
