Satchmi is thrilled to announce that they are officially the first Philippine store recognised by which is now on its Tenth Year.

Barring their value with hip-hop and dance DJs, vinyl records seemingly were sent to the graveyard when physical digital media (the compact disc, remember those?) was set to be the new standard. Fast forward to now, and the physical digital itself has been laid to near extinction by virtual digital equivalents; in short, the digital playback systems (i.e. mp3 players, smartphones, streaming service sites such as Spotify) are reaping the commercial benefits. It would seem unlikely for analog vinyl to return, but indeed the has-been has been resurrected. And while the vinyl record and the turntable are unlikely to be the standard media that they were for decades, sales globally have been significant enough for stores such as Satchmi to pursue it as a viable lifestyle-oriented business. Vinyl records do sound warmer, the artwork larger and easier to appreciate, and allow for a “one-on-one” experience between the artist and the fan.

According to the official Record Store Day website, “Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica.”

Satchmi for its part will be holding special promos and freebies until April 23, including the Red Crate Sale which features up to 20% off on all records and the Philippine-made portable turntable the Motorino Mk. II at its two branches in SM Megamall and UP Town Center. It will also release pre-signed vinyl records of select local artists on April 22 and 23 with a free RSD pin for every purchase. For vinyl connoisseurs outside Manila, Satchmi will offer 10% off with free shipping nationwide.
