Alternative local baroque-pop rock band Tanya Markova just released their latest music video for their single “High End” from their successful sophomore record, Mr. Tililing. The 8-piece band’s lead singer Norma Love answered a few questions from BillboardPH regarding the track’s history and the production process for its much-awaited music video.
What was your inspiration for coming up with “High End”? Were there any personal experiences that happened to any of the members that inspired them to write the song?
I “quite” experienced it during my college days. May niligawan ako sa kapitbahay na school (Nung nasa San Beda pa kasi ako ‘nun sobrang tipid din kami. Wala akong funds na pang-gimik o ano man) and she was really pretty. Kaso wala akong sapat na pera para ilabas para sa kaniya. Akala niya ‘ata di ako nag-eeffort. Ayun basted ako (hahaha). Anyway, the main reason why this song was created was because it was loosely based on this well-known band who has an outrageous list of demands from gig organizers whenever they are playing. It kind of influenced us to write this song because of the thought that some people are just “elitists” and “high maintenance”. Iniisip din naming yung mga tipo ng tao na snobbish or “pa-hipster kuno” (nothing against hipsters especially yung mga hindi pa-cool and effortless) when we wrote it. The concept is about this guy who falls in love with a cultured “hipster” and thinks he is not cool enough. At the end of the day, we just decided to come up with a simple love story between a poor boy and rich lady.
How did you go with the creative process? What new things did you come up with?
It is actually the first time that Iwa Motors (Angelo del Pilar, co-vocalist) and I decided to just create an upbeat song na hindi namin alam kung saan makakarating yung melody. Hawak niya gitara and then may recorder, then nagha-hum ako ng kung anong melody and lyrical idea na lumalabas sa utak ko. Afterwards, nung na-record namin, hinimay namin tapos kinuha namin yung magandang parts tapos tsaka naming inayos yung pagkakasunod. (For me), this is actually the most enjoyable among the songs we did. The melody was conceptualized first followed by the words.
What was the most exciting part when you shot the music video?
So kelangan may timing yung gagawin namin kasi may hawak din kaming party poppers na kailangang pumutok on cue. Medyo challenging siya pero masaya naman kami sa finished product ng scene na yun. Tsaka relaxed lang yung set so walang hassle.
What’s your message to the guys and girls who are in love with someone who’s “High End”?
My advice for anybody who is in love with a person who is “high end” is to be yourself. Don’t presume that if the one you like is “high end”, he or she does not like the simplest things. ‘Di lahat ng mayaman eh mahilig sa mahal or materialistic. Hehe. If you are sincere with your feelings, and you project yourself to someone na mapagkakagtiwalaan niya, then the material things should not matter. Basta nakita niya na you are kind, good natured, and responsible, maiinlove sa ‘yo ‘yun promise.
